Firm and solid foundations – cementing God’s commands

God’s commands are very clear and simple. Obey and receive His blessings. Disobey and suffer the consequences. God is a just God. As much as He loves us, we still need to face the consequences of every bad/good decision we make in life. This is why it is vital that we cement God’s commands in our hearts. Solid foundations are not easily broken.

King David a man after His own heart, yet he had to pay the price for disobeying God. (2 Samuel 12:7-14)

(1) King David commits adultery with Bathsheba. Instead of owning up to the sin he committed at that point, King David decides to kill Uriah by sending him to the front line in the war and take Bathsheba as his own wife because she was with child. (2) v11-12 God teaches David the consequences of bad decisions we make in life.

(3) v13-14 David recognised that he sinned, repents, and restores his relationship with God.

King David numbers his soldiers. (2 Samuel 24)

(1) King David disobeys God’s commands by counting the fighting men.

(2) Joab reports to King David the total fighting men of Israel were 800,000.

(3) David was conscience-stricken after what he did and repents to God.

(4) Because He disobeyed God, 70,000 people from Dan to Beersheba died from a plague sent by the Lord.

Let King David’s life be a reminder of what it means to cement God’s commands in our hearts. Today, I pray that we would desire to correct any areas in our lives where we have been disobedient to God. We must repent. We must accept the consequences of the choices we make, but we must learn from our mistakes. We must continue to cement God’s commands; otherwise we will fall prey to sin again and again and again.

We must cement God’s commands in our hearts. There are countless men and women in the Bible that God uses as testimonies. Those that obeyed were blessed. Those that were stubborn and unwilling to repent were not blessed. However, I am encouraged by those that God used despite their sins and flaws. They learnt from their mistakes. They repented, and the life they lived after was far greater than what it was before.
