Absolutely non-negotiable – love your enemies

Luke 6:27-28 Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

To love our enemies is an absolute non-negotiable. How we treat our enemies is between you and God. How you treat people that you don’t like is between you and God. The same goes for those that persecute, kill, and abuse those that we love. We have the right to hate. We have the right to fight back and do likewise. However, how you treat your enemies is between you and God.

To love our enemies does not mean that we are passive. There are many evil people in this world that are forcefully causing harm and danger towards our loved ones. To love our enemies, does that mean we passively let our enemies attack? No! Absolutely not! We pray for them. We pray that God will touch their hearts. We pray that God would open their eyes. We pray and declare that God will judge them. But we don’t hate, and we don’t curse.

Speak well of your enemies. To speak well of our enemies is one of the hardest things to do. I would like to take this opportunity to honor my father and I know that God is going to bless him tremendously. He does not boast, he does not curse his enemies, and he probably would never share to the world what he has gone through. At a point of prominence in his career, my father was faced with unkind men who were talking badly about him behind his back. Putting down his character in writing. Furthermore, they brought shame to our family name. However, not once have I heard my father speaking badly towards these men.

Don’t play the same game. My Father in heaven and my earthly father have taught me this simple principle which I pray and hope that you too would learn. Don’t play the same game. With God as our Father, who can be against us? Who can defeat us? We don’t have to play their same game! We are defined by God not by our enemies.

Romans 8:31 If God is for us, who can be against us?

They may curse, but we bless. God protects us from our enemy’s curses. People may talk behind our backs. People may condemn us, speak poorly about us, and smite us. However, we don’t play the same game. All we do is bless, bless, and bless.

Right now I pray that You would take the time to pray for your enemies. Let us pray that God would bless their lives. Bless their families. That God will give them a great future, one that gives them salvation. Let us not be self-righteous, but in humility let us pray that God would free them from their sins. We are all sinners.
