Words of Encouragement for Every New Day ~ 14 Mar 2009

Absolutely non-negotiable – the legacy you leave behind

What will be said of us when we are dead and gone? What I love so much about the Bible is the genealogy that can be traced back to generations. The amazing thing is that God does not withhold the good, the bad, and the ugly. I pray that today’s Words of Encouragement would inspire us to establish strong foundations that we can pass on to the next generation because, GOOD OR BAD, the legacy we leave behind is an absolute non-negotiable

Right now I am in the book of 1 Samuel and God gave me this revelation. King Saul comes from the trybe of Benjamin (1 Samuel 9:1 There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin). In fact we know that King Saul’s home was in Gibeah (1 Samuel 10:26 Saul also went to his home in Gibeah).

What is the significance of Gibeah? If we go back to the book of Judges, we will learn that the people of Gibeah were the ones that tortured and abused a Levite’s concubine (Judges 20:5 During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me. They raped my concubine, and she died). Furthermore, when the Israelites found out about what had happen they wanted the Benjamites to surrender the wicked men of Gibeah, but instead they did not listen, and they went to war with the Israelites (Judges 20:13-14).

What legacy will you leave behind? God chose Saul to be king, despite his family’s lineage. The legacy that was left behind to Saul was not strong. In fact the foundations that they passed on to Saul were weak (1 Samuel 9:21 “But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe of Israel, and is not my clan the least of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin?”).

In my opinion, I believe that God chose Saul to be king to redeem his family lineage. However, King Saul did not care about working on his foundations. Today, I pray that we would learn from the many books of the Bible. It is time we ask God to be our rock and solid foundation. We may not come for generations of famous people. But so what! Today, we ask God to lay the foundations strong in us so that we can pass them on to the generations after us.
