Word of Encouragement for Every New Day ~ 4 Oct 2008

The test of faith – gratitude

Today’s word of encouragement is about gratitude. It is easy to praise and thank God during the good times. But is it easy to thank God during the trials, adversity, and the painful times? All these are test of faith.

The song “It is well with my soul” was written by Haratio Spafford. Spafford was faced with several traumatic events before this song was actually penned. First was the lost of their son in 1871. Then the great Chicago Fire came which financially ruined him. Planning to visit Europe he decided to send his four daughters and his wife first. However, while crossing the Atlantic their ship collided with another ship. His four daughters died and only his wife survived.

Instead of being bitter and angry at God, Spafford recognized that God is in control. To give thanks to God while faced with trails is tough. But to do so means that we know who is master and who is in control.

Today, I hope you can find the time to listen to this song again. I hope the lyrics would encourage us to give thanks when we are faced with our own trails and sufferings.
