Ten Commandments: #2 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. (Deuteronomy 5:11). There is a difference between freedom of the world and freedom defined by God. The third commandment states, you shall not use the Lord’s name in vain. Today’s word of encouragement is a clear reminder that we need to be careful with our mouths. To use the Lord’s name in vain encompasses a wide range. From as simple as cursing, to even lying by using the name of the Lord, and gaining recognition that belongs to God. Out of frustration sometimes the only words that run through our minds are bad language. We need to be mindful and careful of this. Today if that sounds like you, I encourage you to purify your thoughts because out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. We need to be very careful about how we share promises that God has given to us. If we tend to exaggerate God’s promises for us, or fluff up our testimony, we may fall guilty of using God’s name in vain. Leadership, titles, awards, is all useless in the eyes of God. We have to be very careful with titles, “prophet, apostle, etc.” God can use anyone, and if we are claiming titles are we no different from the Pharisees and Sadducees? Today, let us make a commitment to God that we will not use His name in vain. © July 2008 Shaun Lee. www.everynation.org.sg archive: www.shauntzen.blogspot.com |
