Words of Encouragement for Every New Day ~ 4 Apr 2009

Picking your battles As we begin a new series on picking your battles, I believe that God is going to equip us with the right weapons to fight the right battles. Just as God equipped David with a sling and stone, it was enough to defeat Goliath the giant. 1 Samuel 17:50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. The right equipment for the right battle is crucial. When I turned 18 just like many Singaporean males we had to join the national service. Through our basic training, we studied many wars in history and why some were successful and why others weren’t. What I remember most is the war that the United States fought against Vietnam. The US army went in to Vietnam unprepared, not knowing the terrain, and many US soldiers died. The battles that we will face in life require different equipment for different battles. Through this series, I pray and hope that we will be ready and prepared to face the battles. The biggest battles in life come at an unknown hour, when we are unprepared, and it requires nothing but our training from years past. David knew that he could take out Goliath with just a sling and a stone, because he had killed a lion and a bear before. Today and from now on, I pray that we would remember the story of David when we face our own battles in life. How will we respond when we face our battles? Will our training pay off? What type of training am I referring to? (1) Our relationship with God. (2) Our faith to hold on to God’s promises. (3) Our daily habits of reading the Word of God, praying, and worshiping His name.
